Tell us about a time your convictions put you at odds with popular opinion. How did you handle it?
As a member of the Committee of Adjustment, I have encountered situations where I sympathized with concerns raised by residents but had to decide an application based on the evidence and the statutory planning criteria before the Committee. For example, concerns such as parking can be very important to neighbours but may not be relevant to the specific variance being considered. My responsibility is to listen respectfully, understand the concerns and then make the decision based on the Planning Act and the evidence applicable to the application.
What principles guide your approach to public spending?
Prudence, accountability and measurable results. Public money should be directed toward priorities that deliver value, with clear objectives and follow-up on whether those objectives were achieved. I support reviewing existing programs before adding new spending, pursuing efficiencies and partnerships, and maintaining infrastructure before deferred work becomes more expensive.
How do you engage with churches, faith communities and other community groups, and how would you approach that engagement if elected?
I believe councillors should be accessible to the full range of organizations and residents that make up the community. I would listen to community and faith organizations, attend community events where appropriate, and maintain open communication while making decisions based on the public interest, evidence and the responsibilities of municipal government.
